Klassiki presents SAKHA FILM: On Nature’s Edge, an online film season celebrating a stunning selection of award-winning films from northern Siberia.

From 14 October 2021 until 18 November 2021, Klassiki, the world’s first ever video-on-demand (VOD) platform dedicated to classic cinema from Russia, the Caucasus and Central Asia, will host SAKHA FILM: On Nature’s Edge, an online film season spotlighting a selection of classic and contemporary award-winners from the Sakha Republic in north-eastern Siberia.

This is home to a burgeoning film industry affectionately nicknamed ‘Sakhawood’. Founded in 1992, the region’s state-backed film studio Sakhafilm has dedicated itself to bringing Yakut indigenous life to the big screen. In the last five years this low-budget cottage industry has generated huge interest on the international film festival scene, stunning film critics and filmmakers alike.

SAKHA FILM: On Nature’s Edge will launch with a UK premiere of Eduard Novikov’s quietly powerful drama The Lord Eagle (2018), which swept up awards in Moscow and Montreal as well as a FIPRESCI prize, and will be preceded by a live introduction from the film’s director.

The season will spotlight a selection of four films from the region, premiering a range of Sakha voices in the UK for the very first time. Sakha Film: on Nature’s Edge is complimented by a month-long programme of director and cast interviews, round table discussions, panel talks and additional materials shedding light on the distinct phenomenon of Sakha film and answering the burning question on all film festival programming lips: why is the film industry thriving in the Russian wilderness?

Lord Eagle, The Sun Above Me Never Sets and Summerhouse are all UK premieres. Each film will be available on Klassiki for two weeks. Throughout the season, find a number of published interviews with cast members and directors in the Klassiki journal. Visit the website for detailed programme.
