The UK Tour of Ben Brown’s new political drama,

The UK Tour of Ben Brown’s new political drama, A Splinter of Ice #asplinterofice, which will open on 8 June in Malvern and will tour until 31 July is coming up. Starring Oliver Ford Davies as Graham Greene #grahamgreene and Stephen #Boxer as Kim Philby, the production is directed by Alan Strachan with Alastair Whatley. There will also be an online version filmed at the #Cheltenham #Everyman @everymancinema and available from 15 April to 31 July.

Ben Brown was the writer of the award-winning West End play Three Days in May, which inspired the Oscar-winning film Darkest Hour #darkesthour. Ben's previous plays also include Four Letter Word, All Things Considered, and Larkin With Women. His new political drama explores the unlikely friendship between the novelist and the spy. Set in #Moscow 1987 during the #coldwar, after declining his offer for more than 30 years, #novelist Graham Greene travels into the heart of the Soviet Union to meet with his old MI6 boss, Kim Philby.

This production is produced by Original Theatre Company @originaltheatrecompany – also behind the critically acclaimed lockdown online productions of Sebastian Faulks's Birdsong Online, Louise Coulthard’s Watching Rosie, Torben Betts’s #Apollo 13: The Dark Side of The Moon and, most recently, Peter Barnes’s Barnes’ People.

Poems about paintings, or ”painting poems,” are a great tradition. W. H. #Auden’s ”Musee de Beaux Arts,” about #Bruegel’s #masterpiece ”The Fall of #Icarus” (ominously first published in the Spring of 1939), is one of the most well-known. And the Welsh poet and Anglican priest R. S. Thomas mastered, in works such as ”Van Gogh: Dr Gachet” and ”#Guernica: Pablo #Picasso,” this form of #poetry.

The Pushkin House Music Festival 2021 that took place online 2-14 March opened our eyes and ears to a repertoire of Russian chamber music rarely performed outside conservatories, if at all. The festival is the brainchild of the Russian pianist and Pushkin House Music Director, Alexander Karpeyev, and is the second in as many years. Comprising six concerts recorded at the Pushkin House in London and two lectures, the festival mixed remarkable performances with fascinating insights on music spanning the early 19th-century to the present from Karpeyev, Philip Ross Bullock (Professor of Russian Literature and Music at the University of Oxford), and the pianist Thomas Ang. Professor Bullock’s engaging remarks about 19th-century Russian salon culture, enhanced by Karpeyev’s insightful musical commentary, drew us in while Ang took us to ‘a new place’. At a time when our access to art in #museums is limited, the Museum of Modern Art’s @themuseumofmodernart #exhibition ‘Engineer, Agitator, Constructor: The Artist Reinvented, 1918-1939’ showcases works that were ironically meant to be seen not within the rarefied space of a #gallery but in the midst of the crowded #metropolitan street.
