This is, perhaps, the most controversial of Prokofirev’s works. Mystical, decadent and very Silver Age in spirit, it was cast into oblivion for many decades. Therefore, it is even more remarkable that the Orchestra of Scottish Opera and the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland chose this rather challenging task of reviving it!
Masochistic obsession, black magic, demons and exorcism – based on a novel by Bryusov, Prokofiev’s seething opera is considered his strongest and most dramatically intense score, full of rhythmic power and extraordinary vocal writing. Singers from the Conservatoire’s opera course and student players join professional soloists and The Orchestra of Scottish
Opera. Conducted by Mikhail Agrest, resident for many years at the Mariinsky Theatre.
Curated by Music Director Stuart Stratford, The Sunday Series: Opera in Concert puts the spotlight on early and lesser-known works by opera’s biggest names. Join The Orchestra of Scottish Opera and some world-class guest singers for drama, emotion, romance, and, most importantly, great music.
