The inaugural exhibition, supported by the German Embassy in the Russian Federation, will take place from June 18 to August 24, 2014, in the Big Wine Storage, WINZAVOD’s most noticeable exhibition space. “One place next to another” consists of works from more than 20 emerging as well as renowned and canonical artists from Russia, Germany, Ukraine and Switzerland. Approx. half of the works on show – from large-scale installations to sculptures, objects, drawings, videos and photographs – were commissioned by WINZAVOD, newly conceived and produced for the exhibition. “One place next to another” deals with the notion of “place” in contemporary society and the problem of “site-specificity” in contemporary art. The exhibition not only observes how works of art shape a particular place but also what happens between them, how they relate to one another. To focus on a specific place means to focus on a border, on the relation of one place next to another, on what this “next” can mean for us. How are objects connected to places, and what happens in-between them? The places we live in, share and change – what are they like, in our global society? Once the focus of attention has shifted from a single place to its relations, other relations come to fore which deeply influence art and society: the relations of art with technology, of technology with nature, of the local with the global, and of anarchy with power. “One place next to another” creates a network of interrelated places – punctuated with borders and transition zones, open for interpretation. It is an attempt to find a form for the sites and subjects of contemporary life – with the materials that surround us. Let’s try to focus on reality. “One place next to another” is a special project within the “Moscow International Biennale for Young Art. A Time for Dreams”. The “Focus on Reality” series consists of: “One place next to another” (June-August 2014); “Archeology of the Future” (September 2014); “The Pioneers of Soviet Electronic Music” (November-December 2014).
