“From Furs to Fabergé: Gifts, Diplomacy and British-Russian Artistic Relations” talk by Dr Louise Hardiman on 22 June at Christ College, Cambridge
There are countless examples of visual culture that can illustrate the presence of a flourishing British-Russian cultural dialogue. One fascinating aspect of this history is that of gift giving and cultural diplomacy between the Russian and British monarchies. In 2018-2019, Louise Hardiman worked with Royal Collection Trust and others to organise an academic conference accompanying the groundbreaking exhibition, “Russia, Royalty and the Romanovs” at The Queen’s Gallery, Buckingham Palace. Building on this important project, she decided to edit a collection of articles on the topic. In this lecture, Hardiman will discuss the book “Courtly Gifts and Cultural Diplomacy: Art, Material Culture and British-Russian Relations”, which was published by Brill Schöningh in spring 2023. Covering topics from ambassadorial portraits to gifts of exotic plants, to objects of Fabergé, the book presents a richly illustrated survey of the topic through essays from twelve experts drawn from academia, Royal Collection Trust, and the private sector.

Bach in Leipzig, All-Union competition of S.V. Rachmaninoff in Moscow, International summer academy Mozarteum, and the Tchaikovsky Competition.

Maxim Vengerov,the Pavarotti of the violin,charmed and seduced a packed Albert Hall with superb performances in this Brahms Gala concert.His violin concerto and the double concerto where he was joined by the beautiful young cellist Lied Haga.
With the genial Marios Papadopoulos and his creation ,the Oxford Philharmonic Orchestra who followed every nuance of these two artists as they played every glorious note by heart.
From the heart to the heart as the orchestra filled the vast hall with glorious sounds inspired by such wonderful playing.
Vengerov,microphone in hand,thanked his superb companions in this musical voyage together dedicated to Brahms.
But there was more to come with a surprise encore.
With great charm Vengerov announced that he would play together with nine of his students from the masterclasses he holds regularly at the Royal College.
Joining in the fun were Mira Marton,David Horvat,Elif Canserver,Molin Han,Deniz Sensoy,Esther Park,Lucilla Mariotti,Annissa Gybel,Ilai Avni.
A work by Pablo de Sarasate for two violins that this evening would be with ten!

Nadezhda Khvoshchinskaya (1821–1889) was one of Russia’s greatest nineteenth-century novelists, yet today she is virtually unknown. One of three literary sisters (the “Russian Brontës”), Nadezhda was the third highest paid author in Russia by the 1870s, yet she disappeared from literary history in the twentieth century as the Bolsheviks nationalised the works of fifty-seven writers – all men – for publication in greater quantities than Soviet literature.

From 29 November 2022 to 30 April 2023 Despite these tragic circumstances, Ukrainian art of the period lived through a true renaissance of creative experimentation. In the Eye of the Storm reclaims this essential – though little-known in the West – chapter of European modernism, displaying around 70 works in a full range of media, from oil paintings and sketches to collages and theatre designs. Following a strict chronological order, the show presents works by masters of Ukrainian modernism, such as Oleksandr Bohomazov, Vasyl Yermilov, Viktor Palmov, and Anatol Petrytskyi. Exploring the polyphony of styles and identities, the exhibition includes neo-Byzantine paintings by the followers of Mykhailo Boichuk and experimental works by members of the Kultur Lige, who sought to promote their vision of contemporary Ukrainian and Yiddish art, respectively.
