IVAN TSAREVICH AND THE SOVIET CANDY WRAPPER "Read IVAN TSAREVICH AND THE SOVIET CANDY WRAPPER
"Reading many illustrated Russian fairy tales and national stories, one may be drawn to the likes of ‘Clumsy Bears’, ‘Red Poppy’, one of my personal favourites ‘Kara-Kum’ as well as other classics by Soviet confectionary manufacturer Красный Октябрь (“Red October”). The Soviet фантики or “candy wrappers” have been an element of discussion predominantly in Russian media over their discourse in the West which remains limited. In this discussion, I strive to illustrate the link of the Soviet candy wrappers to the Russian soul and childhood, particularly fairy tales. In other words, how the art of Soviet candy wrappers presents romance, dreaminess and nature as can be seen in fairy tales – as seen in my eyes" -- by Lana Velkova

Thank you, everyone, who joined us for The Cosmic Thank you, everyone, who joined us for The Cosmic House private tour. We hope you enjoyed it as much as we did.
Densely packed with ideas, symbols and motifs, its architecture embraces an entire cosmos of architectural allusion, history, metaphor and reference. Switching between pop and classical culture, between high art and accessible kitsch, it became a built manifesto for the architecture that emerged in reaction to the slowly solidifying canon of Modernism as it faded in the late mid-century. Designed in collaboration with architect (Sir) Terry Farrell, and built between 1978 and 1983, the house became a forum for conversation and dialogue at the epicentre of the Post-Modern moment and the cultural discourse around ideas, history, science and aesthetics.
Here are some photos from the tour. We are planning more tours like this in the future - watch this space!

SHENGELAIA AT 90: AN EXCLUSIVE RETROSPECTIVE OF GE SHENGELAIA AT 90: AN EXCLUSIVE RETROSPECTIVE OF GEORGIAN FILMS by Klassiki
From 9 February to 2 March 2023, Klassikii members can look forward to an exclusive retrospective of #Georgian auteur, Eldar Shengelaia, as we screen new restorations of five of his most beloved #films.
Klassiki presents Shengelaia at 90, highlights of which include screenings of #classic titles The White Caravan (1963) and Blue Mountains (1983) at the Garden Cinema, London, as well as the #online #premieres of The White Caravan (1963), Eccentrics (1973) and The Chair (2017) alongside existing Klassiki titles An Unusual Exhibition (1968) and Blue Mountains (1983).
Classic Georgian cinema has long been defined by the auteurs who lit up the #Soviet studio system with their #poetic #visual imagination: Tengiz Abuladze, Otar Iosseliani, and others. Perhaps the most under-appreciated of these figures outside of Georgia, Eldar Shengelaia, is nonetheless one of the most significant film artists the country has produced, his works retaining their political and artistic sharpness to this day.
The season will be accompanied by an exclusive online interview with Eldar himself and a round table discussion of his filmmaking career.

ALEKSANDR RODCHENKO’S PHOTOGRAPHY: SEEING THINGS ALEKSANDR RODCHENKO’S PHOTOGRAPHY: SEEING THINGS DIFFERENTLY BY PETER LOWE
"As Aglaya Glebova writes, Rodchenko’s great value as a #photographer of #Soviet life is not only his choice of subject matter (it is hard to visualise 1920s Moscow without, consciously or not, having one of his images in mind) but his willingness to foreground the act of looking and seeing the world around you. While the more overt propaganda of the mature #Stalinist state makes no secret of what it is, Rodchenko’s photographs of a world slightly different, slightly askew, remain fascinating. Including as it does some of the most celebrated images of the Soviet era, Rodchenko’s body of work in photography holds open a window to another time and place, while simultaneously reminding us to always look twice at the strangeness of our own. For those new to his output, or those wanting to enjoy it again, Glebova’s book is a valuable addition to the #literature on this remarkable and always relevant figure". -- Peter Lowe

UMBERTO GIORDANO’S FEDORA #LIVE FROM THE MET - 1 UMBERTO GIORDANO’S FEDORA #LIVE FROM THE MET - 14 JANUARY @barbicancentre
Umberto Giordano’s exhilarating #drama returns to the Met repertory for the first time in 25 years. Packed with memorable melodies, showstopping arias, and explosive confrontations.
Fedora requires a cast of thrilling voices to take flight, and the Met’s new production promises to deliver. Soprano Sonya Yoncheva, one of today’s most riveting artists, sings the title role of the 19th-century Russian princess who falls in love with her fiancé’s murderer, Count Loris, sung by star tenor Piotr Beczała. Soprano Rosa Feola is the Countess Olga, Fedora’s confidante, and #baritone Artur Ruciński is the #diplomat De Siriex, with much-loved Met maestro Marco Armiliato #conducting.
#Director David McVicar delivers a detailed and #dramatic staging based around an ingenious fixed set that, like a #Russian nesting #doll, unfolds to reveal the opera’s three distinctive settings—a #palace in #St. Petersburg, a fashionable Parisian salon, and a picturesque villa in the Swiss Alps.
This #live #cinema transmission is part of The Metropolitan Opera award-winning #Live in HD series, bringing #opera to #movie theatres across the globe.

RACHMANINOV’S FIRST: 18 JANUARY AT @southbankcen RACHMANINOV’S FIRST: 18 JANUARY AT @southbankcentre
‘Vengeance is mine; I will repay, sayeth the Lord’.
And taking his cue from those thunderous words, the young #Rachmaninov hurled himself into the mother of all First Symphonies.
It was lost (but later recovered) when its #composer fled the #Russian #Revolution for a life of exile.
It’s a gripping climax to a concert that begins with Brett Dean’s musical re-imagination of an ancient culture, and features the UK premiere of Kinan Azmeh’s jazz-inspired #Clarinet #Concerto – #music infused with the sounds of his native Syria, and performed tonight by the #composer himself.

CHEKHOV’S GRAND PIANO - 14 JANUARY @osoartscentr CHEKHOV’S GRAND PIANO - 14 JANUARY @osoartscentre
There are many parallels between the works of Anton Chekhov and that of his compatriots. Chekhov’s writing is filled with allusions to music, especially the piano, and some of the plays have piano interludes. Shostakovich noted that Chekhov’s short stories were written in sonata form. #Chekhov corresponded with #Tchaikovsky, whom he revered, and his friend #Rachmaninoff played the piano in Chekhov’s summer home The White Dacha at Yalta.
In this mixed-genre production from @7starconcerts the words of the great Russian writer, Anton #Chekhov, are interwoven with music by #Tchaikovsky, #Rachmaninov, #Prokofiev and more, plus original compositions by David le Page, inspired by ‘The Seagull’.
‘Chekhov’s Grand Piano’ interweaves piano music by #Tchaikovsky, #Rachmaninoff, #Prokofiev and #Kreisler with readings from the ‘The Seagull’, ‘Ivanov’, ‘The Cherry Orchard’ and ‘The Three Sisters’, selected and read by actress Susan Porrett.

STORMS OF PASSION – JANÁČEK’S KATYA KABANOVA STORMS OF PASSION – JANÁČEK’S KATYA KABANOVA: 13 JANUARY 2023
Janáček’s opera “Katya Kabanova” is that of loneliness, love, and the price of passion, in a dramatic #concert #performance from Sir Simon Rattle and a hand-picked, star-studded cast.
Katya is young, sensitive and desperate for love. But trapped in a remote country village with a bored husband and his snobbish family, she has no way out, until a summer thunderstorm changes everything. Uncompromisingly honest, and pulsing with intensely human emotion, the story of 'Katya Kabanova' is written in music that cuts straight to the chase. @londonsymphonyorchestra concert stagings of classic operas always make headlines: this will be one to remember.
The cast includes the #super #tenor Simon O’Neill and living #legend Sir John Tomlinson. And appearing in one of her signature roles, as seen at the @royaloperahouse, Amanda Majeski as Katya.

🤩⭐️PRIVATE GROUP VISIT TO THE COSMIC HOUSE 🤩⭐️PRIVATE GROUP VISIT TO THE COSMIC HOUSE AT THE JENCKS FOUNDATION – 24 JANUARY
We are delighted to offer our readers a new #experience – a group visit to the The Cosmic House at the Charles Jencks foundation, a laboratory of #Post-Modern #culture that frames architecture in its most universal context, to understand how the man-made is an expression of our #cosmic existence.
The tour will take place on Tuesday, 24 January 2023, 1400 – 1530. We will be greeted by the museum specialist at the Cosmic house and offered an introduction into the world of Charles Jencks, #postmodernism and the house. You will then have time to explore the house at your own pace and in the end we will gather again to ask any questions that you may have to the museum expert.
Charles Jencks (1939–2019) was a #writer, #critic, #designer and #teacher whose work defined and refined the disparate and wide-reaching ideas behind #Post Modernism. Arguably the most widely-read and influential writer on #architecture of the late twentieth century, his books were pivotal in explaining, illuminating and developing the often complex ideas behind Post Modernism.
The Cosmic House was a physical #manifestation of those ideas incorporating and metabolising references to developments in art history and #science, #philosophy, #cosmology and the body.
The cost of the tour is £25 per person. Please contact Natasha Butterwick at natasha@russianartandculture.com to book. Places are very limited, so please book early to avoid disappointment.
Bring a friend or come to meet like-minded people. This experience would make a great Christmas or New Year gift too!
