Amy Ballard’s interest in Russia began in high school when she read Nicholas and Alexandra by Robert Massie. Her first trip to the Soviet Union was in 1973, and since then has made many more. Her travels have taken her to the Russian Arctic and the Russian Far East. Most of her trips, however, are to St. Petersburg where she visits friends. She serves on the Board of Hillwood Museum, Estate and Gardens in Washington, D.C. After a 40-year career she retired from the Smithsonian Institution as Senior Historic Preservation Specialist Emerita. Her favorite orchestra is the St. Petersburg Philharmonic. She is the author of the St. Petersburg Music Guide
